Children and Migraines: Chiropractic Care Can Help

Children and Migraines: Chiropractic Care Can Help

According to The Migraine Research Foundation, 39 million men, women, and children suffer from migraines across the U.S. You are not alone if you feel constant dull or extremely painful aches. In fact, most people do not realize how disabling migraines can be. At least that was the case for three mothers who realized their children did not just have a “bad headache.” Although migraines get characterized by how much it hurts, there are other symptoms to be aware of:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Sensory Sensitivity
  • Mood Changes

As kids grow up, getting migraines daily, weekly, or monthly can be traumatic. In some cases, many develop anxiety, fearing when the next will pop up. Read on to see how three mothers found new meaning in chiropractic treatments and the holistic relief that comes from visiting a chiropractor in El Segundo.

Mothers Felt Helpless Watching Their Children in Pain
Doctors might recommend adult patients take Tylenol, Motrin, or Advil for discomfort. But for kids taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen was not the healthiest or best option. Long-term side effects were a big concern.

Elizabeth Bobrick
At the time, Elizabeth Bobrick’s daughter just turned 13 when she started feeling intense pain in her head. At that moment, she started developing anxiety. No one knew what it was or what she was going through at school – from teachers to guidance counselors. Bobrick described it as “frustrating for parents who wanted nothing more than their child to be pain-free.” In the end, she chose to learn more about migraines and how to treat them before supporting her child through the anxiety.

Bobrick’s daughter tried several migraine medications that appeared to work at first. But the side-effects caused would wreak havoc on her body for two days. According to the Migraine Research Foundation, 10% of school-age kids take drugs meant for adults. Meaning the chances of it working for her daughter may have been relatively low.

Amy Adams
Massage therapist Amy Adams grew up with migraines. So, when her daughter started getting them, she turned to the same treatment – visiting a chiropractor.

As a young girl, her father prescribed sumatriptan. It did not work for her but visiting a chiropractor did. Her migraines went from happening every day to once a month. Chiropractic has become a popular alternative for migraines, especially kids. Three percent of children use chiropractic treatment for pain, based on a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Adams’s daughter sees a chiropractor regularly; it helped cut how often it happens.

Dean Dyer
Dean Dyer was unsure of what to do when her son had early migraine experiences at 9-years-old. It happened several times a month and was so bad that he missed out on school and activities. As someone who suffered from migraines as well, Dyer knew the symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Low energy
  • Hyperactivity
  • Irritability
  • Neck Stiffness

Sometimes patients have specific triggers that provoke the pain. Dyer’s son was allergic to mountain cedar – and it also triggered his migraines. His solution (allergy shots) varies slightly from the others (who went to chiropractic centers).
